Oh, the love and loyalty of a little grandchild! In this world where pride and dignity mean everything, where being bright and looking good are all important, thank God for the uncomplicated heart of a child.
When our young grandchildren saw their grandpa out of the hospital, they ran to him and clung to his side. It didn't matter that his coat hung loosely on his shoulders, or that he had lost that proud bearing of one who has always been in control of his life. This was grandpa and they loved him without reservation.
Most of us forget how to be "as little children" until our changing health forces us back into that position. None of us want it to ever happen. Of all the health problems we face as we get older, our mental health probably concerns us most because we can't fathom ourselves having to be like children again.
As adults we tend to shy away from anyone who has lost some of their mental facilities. Unless we love them a lot, it embarrasses us just to be around them. Our little grandchildren don't have that problem because they are children with child-like love and faith, but a whole lot less pride. We can learn a lesson from them.
I believe the Lord is teaching me lessons in child-like simplicity, faith and love, as I care for my slowly recovering husband, lessons I thought I had learned a long time ago.
