What can we do as Christian Grandparents?

Christian grandparents can make a difference. All Grandparents are special. Christian Grandparents should be extra special. All Grandparents have a lasting influence on their grandchildren. A Christian grandparent should have a godly influence that lasts for eternity.
I would love to hear from other Christian Parents and Grandparents as we address some very important issues.

Christian Grandparenting

Grandparenting means different things to different people, but for Christian Grandparents here are some things that should be true across the board.
  • Christian Grandparents love their grandchildren unconditionally.
  • Christian Grandparents pray daily for their grandchildren.
  • Christian Grandparents are good at listening.
  • Christian Grandparents understand.
  • Christian Grandparents talk to their grandchildren about Jesus.
  • Christian Grandparents tell their grandchildren true stories that teach lessons.
  • Christian Grandparents go places with their Grandchildren.
  • Christian Grandparents use wisdom in dealing with the parents of their grandchildren.
  • Christian Grandparents build up the parents to the grandchildren.
  • Christian Grandparents take every opportunity possible to have an input into their grandchildren's lives knowing that every minute spent will bear fruit for eternity.
I know I have missed a lot, but I thought maybe you could help me add to this list.

Tying Heartstrings while Baking with the Grandchildren

When my daughter Susy talks about her grandma it often centers around a recipe.  I think about that sometimes and wonder what strings will hold the strongest in tying my grandchildren's hearts to mine.  Will it be the songs we sing together, or the trips we take to the retirement home to bless others, or the math or spelling we have fun working on in the mornings?
Or maybe, like my daughter Susy, it will be the strings we tie in the kitchen.  Like Susy's Grandma, I enjoy passing on family recipes to my grandchildren.

It's great just to have a good time with the grandkids.  Your making memories and tying heartstrings.

The recipe for pear platz will be posted on my Helium: How to make Mennonite pear platz with a bread maker

Except ye be as little Children

Oh, the love and loyalty of a little grandchild!  In this world where pride and dignity mean everything, where being bright and looking good are all important, thank God for the uncomplicated heart of a child.

When our young grandchildren saw their grandpa out of the hospital, they ran to him and clung to his side.  It didn't matter that his coat hung loosely on his shoulders, or that he had lost that proud bearing of one who has always been in control of his life.  This was grandpa and they loved him without reservation.

Most of us forget how to be "as little children" until our changing health forces us back into that position.  None of us want it to ever happen. Of all the health problems we face as we get older, our mental health probably concerns us most because we can't fathom ourselves having to be like children again.

As adults we tend to shy away from anyone who has lost some of their mental facilities.  Unless we love them a lot, it embarrasses us just to be around them.  Our little grandchildren don't have that problem because they are children with child-like love and faith, but a whole lot less pride.  We can learn a lesson from them.

I believe the Lord is teaching me lessons in child-like simplicity, faith and love, as I care for my slowly recovering husband, lessons I thought I had learned a long time ago.
